The day of Kartini. In Indonesia, Kartini was a feminist. She struggles for women’s rights in Indonesia. She’s so inspiring. In my college, I also study about Feminism Theory. Mostly, people will say if feminism is struggling with gender equality between men and women. It’s true. But what equality means here?
Gender equality shouldn’t only speak up about the rights, but also the responsibility, etc. As a woman, if we just ask about the equality of rights but don’t want to have the same responsibility then don’t call yourself a feminist. Marked this too, the feminism is not only about women issues.
Feminists also include things such as characteristics. We know, social norms said that men should act like men and women as well. But as humans, we have two sides of characteristic, feminine and masculine. We can't say if only men who can be masculine and women are feminine. No, to keep the stability of life, we should have both of these characteristics.
In real life, I’m so sad to look at social norms. When they see a man with a feminine character, then they will say if he’s a ladyboy. If a woman acts as the man did, then a man will be rude to her. They will say a joke to say if this woman is a man. Do you know what I mean? I hope you understand that.
Another case is when we make an event. To pick up heavy stuff is men’s job and women will move light stuff, why? Because women are weak and some of the women AGREE with that! The woman will say, “I’m a girl and it’s too heavy for me”. Argh.
There’s another case, some of the women are rather to make a friendship with men than women. Why? Because women are too noisy, they love talking about gossip, and some of their gossips are unimportant. Meanwhile, they’re women too. Also, nowadays, not only women who love talking about gossip, sometimes men did it too!
Another case, to be a leader. People say if a man is more rational than a woman. It’s not relevant anymore. Rational or not is based on personality, perspective, and experience too. How a person sees the world, how much experience that they got, how their character has been built since they were kids, how good their environment, and how often they face the problems and solve it well. Both men and women are rational, why? Because human is a rational actor.
Then how about the feelings that include in their decision. Women are more sensitive than men. Well, it’s not always like that. Sometimes, the sensitive feeling’s from women come from many aspects. It means, women usually see something from many aspects not only one or two. Because to make a decision, it needs some consideration, in order to make all the people get the same advantages.
Feminism wants the role of women to exist in the public area. Don’t make a woman as a tool, don’t make a woman look like scenery, and stop command a woman to just stay at home and take care of the children. While they need to go beyond too. They have to show up in public areas. Speaking up and be part of social, political, and economic life.
We are the same, born as a human and have the same rights too. There’s no superior gender or sex in this world. I personally believe if men and women can make a good collaboration, then we can live in peace world.
It’s the 21 Century. Why do we keep talking about this issue? We shouldn’t be if everyone accepts their rights. So let’s start to change our mindset first. Let’s say to our mind if men and women are the same. If a man is strong and a woman too. If a woman is weak and man too. If a man can be a hero, a woman too.
And stop belief with the social norms that exist around you. Bad social norms keep existing because society still believe it. If we try to make a change from ourselves first, then it’s more than enough to reach the first step of feminism.
